I had a chance to check the faulty LCD display. Circuit traces and continuity checks good for the circuit board and header pins. So it looks like LCD is at fault. Since I cannot repair that unit or use any components from it, I discarded the unit.
Currently the v1.0 opensprinkler has a replacement LCD display and the unit is working as it should.

14 Sept 2018 - V1.0 opensprinkler
I ordered the exact part number on the LCD display, from mouser electronics a few days ago. The part arrrived, I soldered a 16 pin header to the lcd, installed it and tested the functionality of the v1.0 unit. It works like a champ! So I now have a perfectly good v1.0 opensprinkler. I boxed the v1.0 since I already purchased a v2.3 unit.

8 Sept 2018 - "old" opensprinkler
I ordered a replacement LCD display for the v1.0 opensprinkler controller today.
This LCD 1602 display is not compatible with the v1.0 opensprinkler. The display is a 1602 but it has a few more bells and whistles that v1.0 does not support. But this display can be used on v2.3 opensprinkler! So I have a spare display for that unit.

8 Sept 2018 - irrigation controller
Checked the controller this morning and it works like it should. The
software interface is pretty easy to use. Problem I have with the
software on the controller, is that it requires outside network access
to function. If your internet connection is down, no controller.
7 Sept 2018 - Opensprinkler 2.3 installed and ready for service
I had a little free time today so I removed the opensprinkler v1.0 and replaced it with opensprinkler v2.3.
Setup of the irrigation controller is very easy and straight forward, took about 10 minutes to get all 4 zones and the programs configured. The weather feature is very handy.

7 Sept 2018 - irrigation controller replacement
On 2 Sept 2018 I ordered a replacement irrigation controller. The old
controller stopped working and would not reset. It eventually did later
that night but I had already ordered the new irrigation controller.
I received the unit today and will hopefully be able to install this evening.

3 Sept 2018 - irrigation controller
After reading the tech data for the ver 1.0 opensprinkler irrigation
controller, I was able to do a hardware reset of the device. That
resets NVM so that the device will use DHCP among other options. After
that it was a piece of cake to setup and get it back to being useful. I
still need to replace the faulty LCD.
2 Sept 2018 - replacement irrigation controller
I purchased a version 1.0 OpenSprinkler kit in 2011. It has been
working just fine during all of that time. But today for whatever
reason, it no longer is accessible via the web interface and the LCD is
non functional, making local access a non starter. So I checked the
OpenSprinkler website and decided to purchase the Opensprinkler 2.3.
